Ants Took My Eyeball is a 2D action platformer roguelite developed and published by Bosmic Forge. Descend into an ever-changing anthill, fight your way through hordes of insects with a variety of weapons, face off against massive bosses, and ultimately find your stolen eyeball. The game offers a nice retro feel with its pixel graphics and is exactly what you’d expect: engaging and a bit chaotic.

The goal is to get your eyeball back from the ants. A tiny bean named Haymo shrinks you down to ant size so you can get inside the anthill and take action. You’re given a stick and an assault rifle to start with, which you can use to make mincemeat of the ants.
Various weapons and items can be found throughout the anthill to aid in your survival against the ants. When you fail, Haymo retrieves you back to his base, where you can purchase various items to help you on your next playthrough.

The anthill has different areas with their own enemy types, from ants to wasps, worms and flies. In certain areas, you can find more challenging enemies that will give you gold to use in Haymo’s shop between levels.

Ants Took My Eyeball’s playability is pretty fine

The game plays smoothly on keyboard and mouse. Playing with a controller adds its own challenge to the game, where precise jumping and aiming are sometimes required. The game has a good amount of challenge, and the difficulty level is just right.

Character skills can be improved by finding different equipment in the anthill areas or from Haymo’s shop. Equipment can, for example, give you an extra jump to use or increase critical hit damage.
Ants Took My Eyeball suffers a bit from its Steam Remote Play multiplayer option. It adds lag, at its worst, so much that the game is not enjoyable to play, especially if other players are using controllers.

The pixel graphics are a great fit for this game. The animations are flashy, and each weapon has its own unique look. Additionally, different weapons use different ammo, and their effects are accordingly. The music is excellent and engaging, as you would expect from a game like this.

Ants Took My Eyeball is currently priced at 16,49€ on Steam. There’s a lot of content and replayability in the game, so the price-quality ratio is very good. Highly recommended, as this was one fun gaming experience!

Additional notes:

  • The game is a great choice for fans of roguelikes and retro-style games.
  • The combat is challenging but fair, and there is a lot of depth to the system.
  • The game is visually appealing with its pixel graphics and unique art style.
  • The music is catchy and fits the atmosphere of the game well.
  • The game is a bit short, but the replayability factor is high thanks to the procedurally generated levels and the variety of weapons and items to discover.

Fox Score: 8.6/10

Pros:

  • Music
  • Difficulty
  • Variety of weapons
